Spring 08 Teaching Fellows
 Seminars and Class Requirements

 

Spring 08 Seminars (refer to calendar for locations and times).  There are 8 seminars offered this semester; 2 are on Monday;

2 on Tuesday; 2 on Wednesday; and 2 on Thursday.  We have tried to accommodate your busy schedules.  Please arrive early to seminars and allow plenty of time after the seminar to get to other activities in case the seminar runs late.  We have invited quality speakers; they deserve your promptness and undivided attention.  Please conduct yourself in a professional manner and refrain from eating, chatting, or doing any other work during the seminar.  Doing so will result in your not getting credit for the seminar.   

 

Tuesday, February 5th  -   “Don’t Know Much About Using Physics Examples in Teaching?”   Mr. Dennis Gilfillan, ASU Senior Teaching Fellow. Using a real freshman’s first semester in high school, Dennis will show how physics can be interjected into classes (World History, Algebra I, Earth Science, English) to give students a more scientific perspective of the physical world.

 

Monday,  February 11th    -   “Popular Culture in the Classroom (Using the Example of Mathematics)”   Dr. Sarah Greenwald, ASU Math Professor  Popular culture can reveal, reflect, and even shape how society views  subjects such as mathematics. What curious mathematical object is used as a bottle for beer in the 31st century? What is a Frinkahedron? What is the significance of the number 1729?  A calculator and writing utensil will be useful.

 

Thursday, February 21st -      “Thinking Like A Principal: An Insider's View to Classroom Discipline” Dr. Chris Nichols, Asst. Principal, Parkland Magnet High School, Winston-Salem.  Dr. Nichols, ASU TF alumnus will provide an interactive session with real discipline situations from an administrator’s view.  The session will focus on real scenarios and  participants will evaluate what actions should be taken.

 

Tuesday, March 4th -   “Incorporating Music Across Curriculums  Ms. Katie Padgett, Senior ASU Teaching Fellow, and Music Education Colleagues.    Want to know how to incorporate music into just about any curriculum?  Come hear the perspectives of  music education majors who will demonstrate methods to add to your repertoire and build enthusiasm for your classes.

 

Wednesday, March 26th -  Ms. Rachel Pence, ASU Teaching Fellow ‘07.  “Your First Year of Teaching” Ms. Pence is a fifth grade teacher at Virginia Cross Elementary School in Siler City, NC. She will share the trials and joys of her first year of teaching.

 

Thursday, March 27th -  Once Upon a Time  in the Classroom  Mike and Maggie Lowe, a father-daughter team with a combined 35 years of storytelling experience, will help you discover the many benefits of storytelling in the classroom.  They will discuss both the telling and the listening.  Learn how to use storytelling so at the end of the day, everyone "lives happily ever after..."

 

Monday, March 31st   - “Strategies for Student Success with Special Education Students  Ms. Jeannie Caviness, Director of Exceptional Children/Federal Programs for Ashe County Schools. Beginning educators need strategies to serve students with special needs.   After all, every classroom has its challenges and opportunities!  This session will provide information on some of the terminology, resources, and approaches schools and teachers need to serve ALL students successfully.

 

Wednesday, April 9th - "Five Things You Need to Know as an Educator" Mr. Brian Bettis, ASU Teaching Fellows alumni and kindergarten teacher.  This seminar will look at five issues in educaton that effect all educators.  Topics will consist of No Child Left Behind, North Carolina's ABCs, The Achievement Gap, Teacher Leadership, and Creating Partnerships in Education.  This interactive seminar will introduce you to issues you will soon face!
